The Discarded Timelines Principle

The multiverse theory proposes that there exists, or could exist, an infinite number of parallel universes alongside our own. This notion prompts many philosophical discussions regarding free will versus determinism as well as time travel repercussions; any changes made will create another timeline and lead to alternate realities. The Time Error Theory

One of the main challenges associated with time travel and dimension theories is maintaining physically consistent histories within causal loops. One solution explored by physicists involves closed timelike curves (CTCs), which are paths through spacetime that can be repeated without ever going back to the beginning. These could allow time travel into the past but pose several complications that would need to be solved first.

Seth Lloyd of MIT, a self-proclaimed quantum mechanic, has been working on a CTC model that addresses some of these concerns. His theory suggests that adding post-selection processes to quantum measurements will make their paths physical, thereby preventing events that might prevent paradoxes from occurring. Lloyd has even conducted several simulations that simulate this approach with promising results.

To do so, physicists propose building a wormhole or cosmic string at their destination and joining its two strings into one severely curvy spacetime arc. No exact solution has yet been devised, but they hope that further confirmation from CERN on the Franco-Swiss border can provide it.

No matter which CTC approach is chosen, some form of alternate universe will need to be created to protect travelers from themselves. This concept is familiar in science fiction stories, where characters often travel into the future to protect their descendants or prevent events that could potentially create paradoxes from taking place.

The Darkness Beyond Time

A scientist creates a time machine and travels back in time to save her brother from an imminent fatal accident, while her friends use a wormhole to visit the future. Meanwhile, terrorists send a shape-shifting Terminator back in time in order to kill 10-year-old John Connor before he matures into an adult.
